We started out on the end of Lighthouse Ave near the John Denver Memorial. That is the 1st we saw of the ocean so we stopped there and parked. We walked for a little, but it was either 'cow paths' or walking on the shoulder of the road on the bike lane.
Parking in this area is off road, the 'lots' are dirt and there are no markings or stops to keep you from going over the edge. So some people are not as brave as others and don't dare get near the edge making it hard to drive behind them.
The plus of this area is that there is a public rest room.
Having been here a year ago, we knew there was a better walking area further south along the beach.
This are is called the Asilomar State Trail. Parking is parallel parking on the dirt shoulder.
Here the trails are marked with cable/rope in most places. Some of the trail is dirt other is boardwalk. The trail is 2.7 miles to walk the distance. It seemed like we walked that far but we only walked about half of it. This trail is mostly flat.
There are stairs down to the beach but they have been closed both times we have been here because 'high surf.'
... and this area is free and all within sight of the ocean waves.
