We try to walk during the day if there is somewhere to do it. When we got to the Sterling rest area, my wife wanted to just walk in the rest area parking lot.
But there was this nice area right across the street. This rest area, as most in Colorado, are at exits.
It was mid-day and we were working so we only walked for about a half hour. The whole path likely doesn't have more than 2-3 feet change in elevation. And the part we walked on was all paved. It looks like there are more un-paved paths but we didn't look at the posted maps except as we walked past.
The path goes around a man-made pond and also one side is along the South Platte River. Mostly open, not too much place for wildlife to hide.
The park and parking are free.

Picture: The paved path, there are also lights every few feet the whole length of the circle path.
