Google maps says it is about 1/3 of a mile to these falls depending on where you park in the parking lot.

This is considered a rest area so there is no fee to park and walk to these falls. (Or any signs that say you can not park here and walk to any place in the park)

The path to this area is all paved and there is about a 10 foot elevation change but it is on a zigged path.

The water is still high this year, the area where we used to take our kids pictures 30 years ago is gone.

We also walked to the picnic area of the park after driving into the fee area. We walked to this area from the parking lot, then down the start of the Gitchi Gami State Trail. We didn't realize it was the trail right away and as soon as we did, we turned around. We had planned on walking to 'the end of the trail' to see where it goes ... not sure how many miles the trail is today, but the plan is for it to start here and travel 88 miles to Grand Marais.

Here we met up with family and reminisced about being here 30 years ago with all the kids.

The chain in the distance was likely put up in 1937 by the WPA. Most of the chain is still there. I did try to lift a piece that was loose on one end and I doubt I could have carried even one foot of it.

The path to this area is not paved but mostly flat unless you want to walk on the rock to the water. The Gitchi Gami State Trail should be paved for as far as it is finished and any elevation changes should be gradual.

To get to this area you do need a State Park Pass.
